How are Podcast files downloaded?
Podcasts or podcast
files refer to media files such as audio and
video files that can be created by anyone
using special software and then distributed
over the internet through podcast sites. The
major difference between media files and podcast
files is that podcast files can be distributed
automatically through RSS feeds whenever the
content gets updated. The files can then be
downloaded on the computer or a portable media
device such as an Apple iPod.
There is a particular podcast file aggregator
on the computer that runs in the background.
This podcast aggregator continuously synchronizes
itself with the web server that hosts the
podcast files and updates the content through
RSS feeds in case there is any change on the
files on the web server. The new or changed
files are automatically downloaded after specific
intervals such as two hours. The files that
are downloaded can be played and replayed
and they can also be archived with other computer
files. There are some aggregators that can
download the files to the portable device
that is connected to the computer by a USB
cable.
Most of the times the podcast provider decides
as to which files he wants to offer to the
public for downloading and the person who
downloads the files decides which file to
take and which files not to take. People would
rather download podcast files to their computer
rather than downloading them to their media
player as can be verified from a report in
March 2006. This report stated that at least
80% of the podcast users downloaded files
to their computers for viewing rather than
saving them on their Apple iPod.
Users may also look for podcast files in the
online podcast directories. There are some
directories that help the user to view or
listen to the files instead of first downloading
them to their computer. This saves a lot of
bandwidth for the user. However for users
especially in the developed countries, the
bandwidth speed and bandwidth costs are not
major considerations.
People make use of podcasting clients that
are special software that have special syndication
features. Podcasting clients like Apple’s
iTunes player is one of the best podcasting
softwares around. It can be downloaded for
free from the internet on the Apple website.
Other softwares for podcasting include Doppler
that runs on Windows and Juice that runs on
multiple platforms. Podcast files can be either
accessed through a MP3 player or special software
on a computer.
